On
the Lachea island, on the coast and the Mount Fano, they have
been done some discoveries never examinated enough. During the
world war, while our soldiers have been digging on the island,
they discovered some human bones, which means that the cyclopean
rock has been used like cemetery or something else.
However,
there are some traces of human life (Stone Age) thanks to the
discover made by the prof.
Mantovani who found a green stone axe in 1869.
On
the Lachea island is known about the existence of Sicani and
Siculi thanks to Mr. De Fiore who said that there are two sicula
caves at the top of the island.
The
priest De Maria thought that there are 17 tombs digged inside
the island; while Mr. De Fiore referring to the prof. Casagrandi
let us know that on the Great Rock is digged a tomb, now covered
by bricks;
Raccuglia said that on the southern part of the island, among
the basalts, there is another one discovered at the end of 1800,
where they found out a skeleton.
There
are also some traces of phoenician people.
Raccuglia talks about some greek or phoenician tombs on the west side of the
island, while Recupero said that the rests of wall that he
found, they were making part of a phoenician fortification
covering the 2/3 of the island.
Gravagno,
instead, thought that on the island it was built a religious
building on 289 b.C.
There
is another discover made on the Lachea island: digging for the
construction of the biological station, some workers found out
copper nails. The priest Salvatore De Maria from Acitrezza
bought and saved them in his archaelogical collection.
Everything
happened when the marquis Gravina donated the island to the
University of Catania (1896).
